In our latest episode of Merging Minds, brought to you by BureauWorks, we're diving in the world of freelance translation with Adrian Probst. Known for his detailed approach and popular YouTube channel, Freelanceverse, Adrian shares insights for both novices and seasoned pros.

From his approach to client negotiations to his dynamic content creation, Adrian’s story is quite the boost for freelancers navigating the competitive waters of freelance translation.

How to survive as a freelance translator with Adrian Probst

"Translation was a clear choice for me"

Adrian's entry into the world of translation wasn't accidental but a calculated move driven by a passion for languages and recognition of his own academic strengths - his pursuit of a bachelor's and then a master's degree in translation laid the groundwork for his freelance career.

“I always knew I wanted to work as a translator,” Adrian reflects. His initial foray into freelancing replaced the typical student job, quickly connecting him with clients who remain in his portfolio to this day.

Now the creation of Freelanceverse was just a personal challenge as a remedy for lockdown monotony. Adrian's initial goal to produce weekly videos blossomed into a thriving online community that supports and educates freelancers. "The community's support was overwhelming, and it really pushed me to continue beyond the initial year"

As of July 2024, his channel boasts over 30,000 followers! A testament to his engaging content and commitment to supporting fellow freelancers. “People were very receptive, even answering each other's questions in the comments.”

The Art of Negotiation

Javi and Adrian's talk went deep into the delicate art of negotiation, a skill Adrian considers crucial yet challenging for many freelancers. He emphasizes the importance of positioning oneself as an equal in discussions with potential clients. “You should be on the same level, at least meet them at eye level,” he advises, as daunting as that may seem.

Like other translators we've spoken to, Adrian agrees that uplifting the translation community instead of putting colleagues down is a must - especially in recent years as technology continues to revolutionize the industry.

"It’s about standing your ground and ensuring you’re seen as a peer in these discussions."

The Mantra of Consistency and Authenticity

Adrian attributes his success to two main factors: consistency and authenticity. His dedication to regular content production has not only solidified his digital presence but also boosted his confidence in public speaking. “Sharing genuine experiences and maintaining a reliable posting schedule have been fundamental to my growth.”

Equally important, he notes, is authenticity. “It's all just a journey for myself, sharing my experience,” making sure his audience gets real insights and value from every single interaction with him.

Gold nugget for aspiring freelancers

For those looking to carve out their niche in the freelance world, here's what Adrian had to say: start building your portfolio with volunteer work. This approach might allows for skill enhancement while contributing positively to society.

He also encourages stepping away from gig websites whenever possible, in order to forge more sustainable, direct client relationships. “Focus on enhancing client quality over quantity to scale your freelance business effectively.”
