Today on Merging Minds, we’re kicking it with Kathleen Bostick, a powerhouse in the localization world, former Executive Vice President at SDL North America and a veteran leader with a career that's as varied as it is inspiring.
She joined Javi to spill the beans on her journey through the ups and downs of the localization industry.
The Path Less Traveled: From Railroads to Localization
Imagine switching tracks from the old-school railroad biz to the high-speed world of localization—quite the leap, right? That’s exactly what Kathleen did.
Starting in an industry where cold calls were unheard of to dialing digits to make deals in localization, she mastered the art of adapting on the fly. Kathleen jokes, “I had to learn how to pick up the phone or I was out of a job!”
Her initial years in the railroad industry, where she broke new ground for women, laid a foundation of resilience and innovation. Transitioning from railroads to localization, Kathleen recalls the stark differences and the adaptability required to thrive.
Kathleen vividly recounts a defining moment early in her career at SDL, where a potential $1 million project with EADS marked a turning point. And this wasn’t just a win; it was the moment Kathleen knew she was in it for the long haul. “That deal was a game-changer—it made me realize I could really make a splash in this industry,” she recalls.
Winning this project not only solidified her decision to stay in the industry but also underscored the importance of seizing opportunities and, of course, building relationships!
Facing Setbacks with a Smile
From navigating male-dominated industries to making tough business decisions, Kathleen's been through thick and thin. A significant setback in her journey happened when an expected deal was lost to a competitor due to a less-than-perfect client engagement experience overseas.
This made clear the critical value of cultural sensitivity and meticulous planning in global business. "It was a hard lesson, but it reshaped our approach to international client relations."
“It taught us the importance of not just meeting but exceeding client expectations, no matter where they are in the world."
Empathy and Inclusivity at the Core
Kathleen's leadership style is deeply rooted in empathy and inclusivity, influenced by personal experiences and a profound understanding of diverse needs, including those of her deaf daughter.
"Inclusion for me is about making everyone not only feel welcomed but also involved." This surely extends to her professional conduct, where she ensures all voices are heard and valued, particularly in decision-making processes.
It's all about bringing everyone onto the dance floor. “It’s about more than just inviting someone; it’s about asking them to dance!”
Kathleen’s Nuggets of Wisdom
As Javi winds down their chat, Kathleen drops some serious wisdom for anyone climbing the career ladder today. “Lean into changes, embrace the quirky turns of your career path, and remember—happiness and fulfillment trump a fancy title any day of the week.”
A true leader is molded by both triumphs and trials, and the real joy comes from riding the waves, not just sailing smooth seas. Her blend of humor, resilience, and wisdom makes her journey a beacon for aspiring leaders everywhere!
